Dundee Rep Theatre led the charge on Sunday 21st October as Scottish theatre companies triumphed at the annual Theatrical Management Association awards. With 5 of the 12 awards for regional theatre heading over the border, the current strength and confidence of Scottish theatre was duly recognised.
Sunshine On Leith, Dundee Rep Theatre's musical based on the songs of the Proclaimers, written by Stephen Greenhorn and directed by James Brining, scooped two awards for best musical production and best supporting role in a musical production (Ann Louise Ross).
Dundee Rep's Artistic Director, James Brining said " It is a brilliant night for Scottish theatre. It felt like going over the border and stealing the Stone of Scone." He added "To win nearly half the awards on offer was a magnificent achievement for Scottish theatre and defines its strength at the moment."
Best supporting performance in a play was won by Meg Frazer for her role of Sue in the Royal Lyceum's production of All My Sons. The National Theatre of Scotland was awarded the best touring production for The Wonderful World of Dissocia and the Citizens' Theatre/TAG added to Scottish theatre's overflowing trophy cabinet with Best Show For Children and Young People for Yellow Moon, written by David Greig.
Lizzi Nicoll, Federation of Scottish Theatre director said " Our directors, writers and ensembles have now established themselves as players on an international stage with their own unique sense of energy and purpose. I am absolutely thrilled that Scottish theatre has been recognised so hansomely at the TMA Awards."
