Federation of Scottish Theatre submits contribution to Creative Scotland’s Theatre Review Thursday, 19 April 2012
FST’s submission to Creative Scotland’s Theatre Review is a combination of consultation with our members over the course of three members meetings in 2011/12 and of further research into the theatre sector in Scotland.
The report consist of two parts: the first one analyses the strengths and weaknesses of the sector, highlights areas for development and makes industry recommendations; the second part concentrates on the ecology of the sector and key statistics which allow us to compare the theatre sector in Scotland against elsewhere in the UK and Europe. This data includes:
• Over 2 million people in Scotland attend theatre every year
• Scottish theatre companies perform in every region of the country across all 32 local authorities
• Over 1/3 of Scottish theatre companies perform outwith Scotland, both elsewhere in the UK and internationally
• Over the last ten years investment in the broad theatre ecology in Scotland has increased at a slower rate compared to England and Wales
Overall, by drawing on the experience of professional theatre organisations in Scotland and matching it with objective UK-wide and European data, the report is a powerful argument for increased investment in the theatre industry in Scotland.
Jon Morgan, Director of the Federation of Scottish Theatre commented:
“Theatre in Scotland is, to some extent, enjoying a current period of strength and success both at home and abroad. Against this backdrop of increasing recognition, there is a strong feeling that the theatre ecology in Scotland has been damaged by a combination of under investment in key areas, a lack of cohesive national strategy and a reduction in artistic opportunity which is preventing creative growth. It is our hope that the Theatre Review will contribute towards helping the sector and Creative Scotland work together to address these issues.“
