Federation of Scottish Theatre

The Access Scottish Theatre pilot has now come to an end.  Captioned performances below will be up to date.

Please check with venues for further accessible performances.

Audio Described Performances

Audio Described performances allow people who are blind or partially sighted to access live performance. Often an audio described performance is preceded by a touch tour of set or costume items. An audio describer meets audience members before they take their seats to introduce the set and characters by providing verbal description. This verbal description then continues through a headset during the performance. For further information or advice please contact the Access Project.

Captioned Performances

FST co-ordinates captioned performances in Scotland by providing captioning equipment to venues and touring companies. Captioning is similar to television subtitling and gives Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people access to live performances. For further information about captioning, booking equipment and hiring a Captioner please contact the Access Project.

British Sign Language Interpreted Performances (BSL)

BSL interpreted performances allow people who are Deaf or for whom British Sign Language is their first or preferred language access to live performance. BSL interpreters provide a linguistic and artistic interpretation. There are estimated to be between 5000 and 6000 BSL users in Scotland. If you would like advice about finding or working with a BSL interpreter please contact the Access Project.
