Federation of Scottish Theatre

Welcome to the Federation of Scottish Theatre

The Federation of Scottish Theatre exists to advance the interests of Scottish Theatre at home and abroad.

It is the membership organisation for the professional theatre sector in Scotland undertaking advocacy at a national level with government and funding bodies, co-ordinated initiatives and providing advice and services to members to secure the creative future of theatre in Scotland. The key objectives of the FST cover three key areas of activity:

  • Advocacy and Communication
  • Information
  • Training and Learning

The Federation of Scottish Theatre exists:

  • to be a powerful and effective voice for Scottish Theatre.
  • to offer support, advice and services to members
  • to promote, enable and sustain best artistic and administrative practice within Scottish Theatre

Representatives of member organisations decide on the policies and priorities of the FST at members' meetings held four times each year. The FST employs a Director to action policy and priority and this post is supported by task-focussed committees of members to drive forward strategic initiatives.

FST is revenue funded by the Scottish Arts Council and works in partnership with the SAC on a wide range of developmental and capacity building projects with additional SAC project funding.

Made in Scotland is a curated showcase providing a platform for Scottish-based companies to present and promote work at the Edinburgh Fringe. The first Made in Scotland has come to an end with the finish of the 2009 Fringe and the fourteen shows have garnered a wealth of good reviews and no less than nine Fringe First, Herald Angel and Stage awards between them!

The overall programme has also met with praise:

Lyn Gardner in the Guardian said Made in Scotland, “has undoubtedly raised the profile of Scottish theatre enormously with London-based theatre critics.”

Iain Macwhirter in the Sunday Herald described the Made in Scotland programme as, “outward-looking productions of international quality.”

Open Space

Open Space 10 & 11 June 2009 : ‘What is our dream for theatre and dance in a new decade?’

Hosted by FST and NTS, the Open Space event attracted over 150 people from across Scotland. Experienced practitioners and administrators, individual artists, freelance artists, emerging artists, students, disabled and BME artists, academics, rural touring networks, unions, local authorities and funding bodies gathered together over two exciting and provocative days. Over sixty topics were discussed and a wide range of opinions aired.
